Training & Development

We want our associates to thrive and grow at Hillrom, so we invest in a number of training and development programs.

Hillrom University is our flagship learning forum. It is available to all Hillrom employees, globally, with easy on-the-go learning in the form of videos from subject matter experts, e-books, summaries, and audio content. To further support learning opportunities for everyone, Hillrom University provides a number of innovative learning options including micro-learning courses – most of which take less than five minutes to complete – with new content added regularly. Hillrom University has an overall utilization rate of 75 percent.

Courses are broadly divided between two platforms: Leadership Development and Business Skills. Areas of focus include: Project Management, Professional Performance, Business Project Management, Professional Performance, Business Communication and Personal Productivity.

We provide custom, instructor-led training programs. Examples include Business Readiness, Leading Through Head, Heart, & Guts, and Conscious Inclusion. In addition, we provide self-paced training options like Management Fundamentals via our online learning management system, Hillrom’s proprietary platform for distributing training to employees. 

Both Hillrom University and the instructor-led programs we offer include leadership training resources, which are available to all employees. We offer dedicated programs for managers and those specifically identified as having leadership potential. Courses include Leading@Hillrom, Growth Action Learning teams, Leadership Fundamentals, Management Fundamentals, and Resource Ambassador training.

As part of our effort to promote and develop internal talent, all employees participate in annual performance reviews, aligned with their individual career development goals.

Tracking Our Progress

To make sure the investments we make in our people are having a positive impact, and to help us continually improve our human resources programs, we track a number of critical metrics:

Internal Hires: We track the percentage of open positions filled with internal candidates as a measure of how successfully we are promoting talent from within. In 2018, the data was as follows:

  • Director and above: 45%
  • Manager and above: 38%
  • All levels: 32%

Employee Satisfaction: We conduct an anonymous bi-annual engagement survey of our global workforce. Administered and analyzed by an independent third-party, the survey results are reviewed by
