According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, falls are a leading cause of hospital-acquired injury, and frequently prolong or complicate hospital stays. Falls are the most common adverse event reported in hospitals. The Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) Prevention of Falls Protocol includes recommendations for a risk assessment for falls in hospitalized patients and focuses on the strategies and interventions required for the prevention of falls and eventual elimination of falls with injury in acute care settings.
